How to find a cruise ship size that's right for you

It can be tricky to understand exactly how big a cruise ship is without seeing it with your own eyes. To help you visualise the size of cruise ships, I’ve made comparisons between average cruise ships and other large things. Most anchors measure between 10 and 20 feet long and 15 to 20 feet wide. In order to help stabilize the ship while docked, anchors typically weigh between 10 and 20 tons. Most cruise ships today actually have two anchors — one on each side of the vessel.

Cruise ship amenities are essential, more so when you have children. In fact, the vessel’s activities and amenities may take preference over the vacation’s itinerary. And you don’t want to book with a ship that doesn’t have any children’s programs, should you have kids in tow. In terms of itinerary, there are things to do that are common and more unusual than those that are included in larger ships. The overall environment is intimate because there are fewer guests.

Small ships are usually defined as those with a capacity of fewer than 500 passengers. These ships are ideal for travelers who prefer a more intimate and personalized experience. Small ships can also access smaller ports and waterways that larger ships cannot reach. As the cruising industry grows, the desire for bigger and better accelerates.

Beyond the biggest ships

With the right research and planning, you can find the perfect cruise ship size to make your vacation unforgettable. They typically have more amenities and facilities than small ships, but not as many as large ships. Medium ships often have multiple dining options, including specialty restaurants, and a variety of entertainment options, such as theaters, clubs, and shows.

For most of the big-ship lines, the midsized ships are their oldest and smallest. You'll find fewer cabin category options and fancy suites, more modest kids' clubs and fewer specialty restaurants. Currently, Royal Caribbean operates the largest cruise fleet in the world, with the most amount of ships. Some of these ships are of average size, some are smaller, while others could be considered giant. Based on these statistics, many of Norwegian Cruise Line’s (NCL) ships fall into the medium, or average, ship standard in terms of size. As do other ships part of other major cruise lines, such as Royal Caribbean, Disney Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, and Carnival Cruises.

The industry buoyantly navigates towards further amplifying cruise ship scale, aiming to deliver the drama and wonder comparable to the iconic and historical Titanic. But while the limit on the size of ships may have maxed out for now, there is still room for more vessels to be built up to current standards. Of the 120 cruise ships included on our chart above, 49 of them (41%) are less than 100,000 gross tons. Consider that from 1990 until 2000, most cruise new ships built were in the 70,000-80,000 gross ton range.

Even though these ships are smaller, they have a sizable staff and provide a high passenger-to-staff ratio. They can go to almost any destination and travel to many exotic ports that larger ships can’t access. Guests can expect a great nightlife, alternative dining options, casinos, spas, and shows. Some ships in this category have been refurbished and offer great value, while others provide a luxury experience.

Royal Caribbean Spectrum of the Seas

The two 142,000 tonnes sister ships Voyager of the Seas and Explorer of the Seas are not shy of their size, either. The Titanic, built for $10 million in 1911, was 883 ft (265m) long. Cruise Hive was established back in 2008 and among the earliest blogs in the industry.

Small-mid ships include the 930-passenger Viking Orion, the 848-passenger Crystal Symphony, and Oceania's 1,250-passenger Riviera. Large ships include the 3,000-passenger Carnival Sunshine, 2,850-passenger Celebrity Solstice, 3,080-passenger Crown Princess, and 2,500-passenger Disney Dream. Mega-ships include the 5,400-passenger Oasis of the Seas and its sister-ships; the 5,282-passenger Carnival Mardi Gras, and Norwegian Cruise Line's Norwegian Encore, to name a few. Inside cabins typically have no windows and are located in the interior of the ship. Outside cabins have windows or portholes that offer views of the ocean or the ship's surroundings. Balcony cabins offer a private balcony with seating and a table, allowing passengers to enjoy the fresh sea air and stunning views. Suites offer more space and amenities, such as separate living areas, larger balconies, and even butler service.

To make it more confusing, a cruise line can have ships of all sizes in its fleet -- and even large, mainstream lines have smaller, cozier ships. Currently the most affordable itinerary sailing with Wonder of the Seas would cost guests about  $1,832 for two people, on a 7-night cruise, leaving from Port Canaveral, Florida. Wonder of the Seas is not just large in its size, it is also expansive in its dining and bar offerings onboard!

Your dining options will be limited, but they won't be as crowded and you can come and go as you please rather than having assigned dining times. Most of the time you can even book specialty luxury packages that provide you with personal concierge services. The entertainment might be more limited but most of the things provided are included in your package deal so you don't end up paying more money for them. The size of your cruise ship has a great influence on the cruise cost. As a rule of thumb, bigger ships offer more features, more amenities, and because there are more people they end up costing you less.

This premier ship has 20 decks along with 2,614 staterooms and suites onboard. Costa Smeralda was named after a popular tourist destination in Sardinia. Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas is the flagship of the Oasis class.
